Consider for a moment, the physical act of desperately searching for something and what that process often entails. For starters, we know instinctively that in most situations, what we have “lost,” is simply out of our sight, temporarily. Take a pair of glasses for example… How many times have we “lost” a pair of shades (or prescriptions) that turned out to be “hiding” right on top of our heads? And let us not forget about the occasional cell phone that’s literally in our hands while we are frantically searching all over for it!
What do these scenarios have in common? The commonality is that what we’re desperately trying to find has, 1. Been there all along and 2. Right in front of our eyes! I’ve come to understand that this is how “finding” one’s purpose usually works. We don’t quite find it – it simply finds us.
So what does this mean for those of us who are feeling lost and purposeless? It simply communicates that there is a strong possibility that you’re currently living in your purpose but don’t recognize it because you continue to search for a gift that has *already* been gifted to you..
Using myself as an example. Family, friends, co-workers and strangers have told me for years that I am inspiring, helpful and motivational, and that I impact lives positively. I’ve also been told by Professors that I’m a great writer. Yet, all of the years that I’ve been told (repeatedly), that these were my gifts, are the very same years that I continuously spent searching for my purpose and for my “why.” It never once occurred to me that everyone were blatantly pointing out that through these gifts, I had already been living in my purpose, every single day!
Regardless of what you believe about yourself, your talents and of your gifts, what are people repeatedly telling YOU about YOU? What’s the running theme? If it’s something that comes to you very easily and you receive compliment after compliment, then that’s likely your purpose. However, like me, you may have a limited mainstream belief of what a purpose should be (singing, dancing, cooking, etc), so with your permission, your “why” in life, continues to elude you, year after year.
The reality is that our purpose is unique and specific to us and thus, already present within. Sometimes, all that is needed inorder to uncover it, is to finally make a move towards ourselves even when we are doubtful of our own gifts and capabilities. I don’t care if you make the best spaghetti in the world – if that is what you love to do and people LOVE when you do it, then do it frequently, all while understanding that this (along with your other overlooked talents), is truly your calling! It doesn’t have to look like what you think it should be; it often looks like what it IS to be..
